music2pc takes downloading of free music on MP3 to the next level. Offering access to more than 100 million MP3 tracks taken from free legal sources, this tiny and extremely easy-to-use utility searches for music files on the Web and downloads them for you either individually or in batches. Once downloaded, the files can be played back offline, uploaded to your favorite portable player, or saved to an audio CD using your default third-party tools.
It just couldn’t be simpler – all you have to do is write a few key words (artist name, song title, etc.) on the box provided and select one of the two Search Providers available. During the review process, both “providers” proved to be equally effective – both retrieved a similar amount of tracks of the artist used for the search, and the only noticeable difference I could find was the bit rate of the tracks. Search Provider 1 seems to offer MP3 tracks with a constant bit rate of 192 Kbps, while Search Provider 2 offers what seems to be variable bit rates, usually higher than 192. Other than that, both searches retrieved a large number of files, enough to keep me and my bandwidth busy for a while. (Of course, the number of hits is usually proportional to the artists’ popularity and to how prolific they are.)
Downloads need to be activated on a file-by-file basis, clicking on the corresponding button beside each entry. You can click on as many files as wished, as music2pc supports batch download. Once the download process has finished, the “Download” button will turn into a “Play” button, which – once clicked – will launch your default media player (or any other of your choice) for you to listen to the selected track.
In a nutshell, music2pc is certainly a useful and simple free utility that will help you build up your music collection in a snap. It has access to a large number of free tracks, which you can legally download and store for personal use in an efficient and quick manner.
